Issue 5 November 2008 |
Welcometo issue 5 of the DP-EVH bulletin providing information about our organisation, courses, events and activities. Online DayThe Online Day to raise awareness of our I.T. courses took place on the 24th October 2008 with particular emphasis on the Myguide provision we offer. There were demonstrations by tutors covering different aspects of computer use, including Digital Photography, Book-keeping, New CLAiT, ECDL etc and the opportunity for anyone interested in learning I.T. to try it out.
Stands manned by staff from Job Centre Plus, Connexions, A4E and Worklink were present to offer help and advice on job search and employment related issues such as permitted work schemes and benefits. There were over 40 visitors on the day all of whom were welcomed by staff, students and volunteers. People had the opportunity of discussing their individual needs and spending time with students and volunteers to get first hand information on their experiences with the DP-EVH. The DP-EVH would like to say a heart felt thankyou to Yorkshire TV's Ian Clayton and local MP Shahid Malik for presenting the awards and giving their time freely. Thanks also go to Hanging Heaton WMC for providing the venue and finally, Simon Thirkill for providing the excellent entertainment, all in all a good evening finishing with music, food and drinks which all made for a memorable social event. Job-Seeking Skills – Entry Level 3This was a new course run by the DP-EVH and was held for 10 weeks on a Wednesday morning from September until the beginning of November. The first part of the syllabus was to help job seekers update or create new CVs, letters of application and complete application forms so that they were equipped with the fundamental documentation required when searching for jobs. The second part of the course entailed using different sources of information, (ie the Internet, Careers Advisers, the Library, Newspapers, etc), to find facts on job sectors, job descriptions and job vacancies.
The course covered registering with online databases, opening free email addresses, uploading CVs and sending job applications online. Several candidates had little knowledge of computers but, with the use of templates, the documents that were produced were professional, up to date and stored on the computer for future use. This course also gave those attending the life skills to continue with job search and job applications throughout their working life. We have received positive feedback from those who attended the course and from other outside sources. We are now delivering this course for other agencies and plan to develop outreach work further in 2009. |
